Development of a Clostridium Difficile Cohort Area
Clostridium difficile infection is an important health care associated infection (HCAI) which causes suffering to patients, increases length of hospital stay (Wilcox et al, 1996) and has a mortality rate of up to 21% (Morgan, 2008). It is the leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhoea both in the UK and the rest of the developed World
This review is concerned with establishing whether an enclosed cohort ward for patients with Clostridium difficile infection are effective in reducing the incidence of cases.
This is a crucial question as cohort wards change the dynamics of a ward, can affect patient flow, require specific facilities, and additional staff who are trained and competent in managing these patients.
