A literature review and framework for practice relating to Infection and Communicable Disease Control with Funeral Directors in East Lancashire
There are approximately 600,000 deaths per annum in the United Kingdom (UK),
of which less than 1% is associated with a known or suspected infection
(Fareham 2002). While not all of these pose an infection control risk after death,
existing viruses, bacteria and fungus can continue to replicate in body tissues,
blood, urine, faeces and visceral organs of the deceased.
