Screening hazardous and harmful drinkers within A&E
A systematic review was undertaken on brief interventions for hazardous/harmful drinkers in an Accident and Emergency (A andE) setting.
It was felt that the review would be of benefit due to a faily extensive evidence base on Brief Interventions. Studies included in this review were drawn from the databases Ovid,
Embase, Psychinfo, Medline, CINAHL, and the British Nursing Index (BNI) spanning the years 1997-2007.
It was felt that a 10 year period would yield an acceptable balance of studies from the more recognized ones to the contemporary ones. Relevant searchterms were used such as “heavy alcohol user”, “alcohol problem”, “alcohol user,” “brief intervention”, “brief advice”, “motivational
intervention”, “emergency room”, “emergency department” and “trauma room” (see appendix for full search results).
I endeavoured to include studies based on a definition of a Brief
Intervention (BI) that was as consistent as possible
