Dyslexia Friendly Schools
General Introduction
This professional development package was developed jointly by the MMU and the BDA funded by the DfES. It comprises:
- A six-session, in-school course manual for self study or delivery by an appropriately qualified teacher or psychologist.
- A DVD demonstrating good-practice in teaching in a dyslexia friendly environment.
- An audio-cd of discussions by professional, parents and pupils about dyslexia and its effects on the learning and lives of children with dyslexia.
You can download the manual and the audio-cd from this web site. You may also stream the introduction to the DVD a full copy of which can be obtained from the MMU. All three elements are also available on a three-disk DVD/CD set from the MMU for the cost of administration and postage.
Course Manual Introduction
It contains tutor notes for six sessions though you may decide to spread these over a longer period according to the needs and time availability of the staff involved. Along with the tutor notes are relevant handouts and masters for overhead transparencies. These are also available on a cd-rom that also contains the transparencies as PowerPoint files.
DVD Introduction
This DVD contains examples of good practice in dyslexia friendly schools. The scenes were filmed in five schools recognised not only for their effectiveness in promoting the learning and personal development of pupils with dyslexia but also for their ability to articulate the foundations upon which that effectiveness is based.
The scenes were not staged for the camera. (We did not have the resources for such elaborate deception!) They were taken during normal lesson times and neither staff nor pupils were coached in any way. The Audio CD, also part of this package, allows you to hear the participants giving more details of their approaches and the responses of the pupils to them.
